Art Classes for Kids

This spring and summer, Latrob e Art Center, Latrobe-GLSD Parks & Recreation, and visual artist Sarah Hunter are working together to bring art classes to kids in grades 1 – 6!

Cost: $15 per student

Cave Art

Tuesday, March 19

6 – 7 p.m.

Students will learn a piece of art history as we discuss ancient cave paintings. Including what these images look like and why they may have been created. After learning a brief history of cave art we will use inspiration from our examples of cave art to create our own unique “cave art” style painting.

Stained Glass

Tuesday, April 16

6 – 7 p.m.

Students will learn about abstract painters and the power of color. Using these artists and color as our inspiration we will create a colorful, abstract “stained glass” sun catcher. Please note that we will not be using actual glass in this project. Our materials will include tissue paper, wax paper, and glue.

Salt Sculpture – Day 1*

Tuesday, May 14

6 – 7 p.m.

Students will spend some time looking at examples of different types of sculpture and sketching out their own sculpture idea. They will spend the remainder of the class constructing their sculpture**. Students will be encouraged to sketch and think about how they would like to decorate their sculpture.

*This is a two-part class. However, if one can only attend the first class they may pick up their project and complete part two at home.

**Note: The ingredients in the clay used for the sculpture are wheat, salt, and water.

Salt Sculpture – Day 2*

Tuesday, June 18

11 a.m. – noon

Students will bring in their sketches and ideas for decorating their sculptures. Students will proceed with decorating and finishing their project.

*Students must have been enrolled in Salt Sculpture-  Day 1 in order to complete this project.

Seascape

Tuesday, July 23

11 a.m. – noon

We will celebrate summer by painting a sunny, beach, scene! Students will be led through a seascape painting. Emphasis on the effects of light will be discussed.
